This year Far West NLG members will be hosted by the San Diego Chapter and community. Please find more information listed below and stay tuned for updates. Also, if you haven't already found us on Facebook, please follow the link below for more information and to let us know you will be attending!
The National Lawyers Guild (NLG) was founded in 1937 as an association of progressive lawyers and jurists who believed that they had a major role to play in the reconstruction of legal values to emphasize human rights over property rights. The Guild is the oldest and most extensive network of public interest and human rights activists working within the legal system.
SAN DIEGO CHAPTER
The founders of the San Diego Chapter were John Porter, Mary Harvey, Ted Bumer, Judy DiGennaro, and Alex Landon. They had their first formal meeting at John Stephens' house in January 1971. Charles Garry came down from San Francisco and was the guest speaker at the meeting. The five of them were involved with the ACLU Legal Panel. Judy and Alex were law students at the time. John Porter was a long time Guild member. Alex spent the Summer of 1970 working for the Los Angeles Selective Service and Military Legal Panel under guild member Bill Smith. Alex attended Guild meetings that Summer, and when he returned to school in the Fall, he began a student group at USD as part of the Law Students Civil Rights Research Council. John, Mary, Ted, Judy, and Alex met a few times and agreed that it was time to have a Guild Chapter in San Diego. They subsequently contacted a number of attorneys and law students and had their first event. The Guild provided a broader perspective in doing political work and using the law to relate to various progressive causes and groups in the community.

"The SDMCP is an organization of vets and other people; we work with active duty folks and their families who are having problems within the Military. We can provide you with information, experience, and support that will enable you to know what civil rights you still have, even while in the Military. We can also help people apply for discharges based on Conscientious Objection, Hardship and Dependency or others. If you need an Attorney, Doctor or Clergy not affiliated with the Military we can refer you to one. We are not, in any way, connected with the Military." contact: sdmcp.org

The United People of Color Caucus (TUPOCC) of the National Lawyer's Guild (NLG) is an alliance of law students, legal workers, attorneys and other people of color within the NLG community.
The necessity of such an organization is borne from the historical context of the capitalist United States where economic prowess is dependent on the furthered and continued subjugation of people of color, women, the poor, queers and other oppressed people. We are dedicated to fostering and supporting the growth and empowerment of all people of color, particularly within the organization of the NLG.
Membership is open to all members of the NLG community who self-identify as people of color. There will be no arbitrary exclusion from membership on the basis of sexuality, religion, gender, gender presentation or identity, sexual orientation, disability or age.
The Labor & Employment Committee of the National Lawyers' Guild
includes lawyers, law students, legal workers, and worker representatives. It serves as a liaison between the Guild and legal organizations that represent organized labor and workers. As well, the L&EC works directly with organized labor and other organizations that represent workers. The Committee collaborates with the AFL-CIO Lawyers Coordinating Committee [LCC], the National Employment Law Association [NELA] , and other professional legal associations on the national and local level. The L&EC also works closely with and supports the Guild's Sugar Law Center for the Economic and Social Justice [Sugar Law Center] to improve conditions in poor and working communities.

NLGs : San Diego Regional Conference, June 24-26, 2011 :
HOTEL AND HOUSING INFORMATION
PLEASE RESERVE YOUR ROOM ASAP. These rooms are part of blocks
that we have been able to acquire. However, as we do not have deep financial backing,
we are going to have to cancel the block (and possibly the group rate) at the hotels at
various cancellation dates to avoid incurring liability for our local chapter. So please
call the hotels and reserve your room soon. The general cut-off date for block
reservations and some group rates is June 3, although some locations have later
cancellation dates. Similarly if you prefer to do the co-housing please advice us soon, as
this will give us a greater idea of how many people will be seeking housing
commercially.
If you would like to book a hotel room elsewhere, please go to hotelworkersrising.org for
the list of union-supported hotels in San Diego.

This is a very nice bed and breakfast, in Little Italy, a nice neighborhood of down town. I
recommend this place. This place is an neighborhood of down town that is not a
comfortable walking distance from the convention site. However, it is walking distance
to a trolley stop. I imagine this will be a fast trolley ride, as you are just going from one
end of down town to another.
Walk 8 blocks (small blocks) to the County Center/Little Italy trolley stop. Take the Blue
Line toward San Ysidro. Get off at Park and Market, walk to 11th and Island.
